Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through the aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage in the house of one of jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
